A good bonsai starts from the selection of seeds

Kumagaien is located near Akaishi Mountain and is the closest garden to the origin of Akaishi Goyomatsu. Kumagaien's specialty is seedling bonsai. Kumagaien's characteristic is the seedling bonsai, which is a method of carefully selecting parent trees with good foliage and short leaves suitable for bonsai.

Mr. Tatsuro Fukagawa, the owner of the bonsai garden, maintains a large number of bonsai trees with the spectacular view of Mt Akaishi in the background. The main species of bonsai is of course the Akaishi Goyomatsu, which is harvested from the mountains in front of the garden. He also handles many other small to large miscellaneous trees, and has about 2000 bonsai trees under his care. Currently, he basically manages the bonsai by himself, from watering to replanting and pruning the trees.

Stepping up as a craftsman

Mr. Fukagawa entered the world of bonsai as an apprentice under a generous and steady master. His goal was to become a craftsman who could be relied on by the local people and contribute to the community. In addition to the daily management of the garden, he is studying and working hard every day to get closer to his goal. One of his goals is to create many award-winning bonsai. Mr. Fukagawa's goal is to win an award at the National Bonsai Exhibition held by the Japan Bonsai Association, which is the dream of every bonsai artist. Mr. Fukagawa is one of those people.
He tends to his trees while imagining how they will look like in the future so that they will become magnificent bonsai. When he talks, his smile is like a young boy talking about his dreams, and his eyes are shining brightly. As he watered the trees, Mr. Fukagawa seemed to be talking to them and putting his soul into them.

Mr. Fukagawa creates delicate bonsai, but he is strong and resilient as he moves forward in the world of bonsai without hesitation. He manages a vast garden by himself while studying his predecessors and pondering the future of the bonsai world.
